William J. Petervary, age 76 years, affectionately known as "Bill", passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2024 at the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ. Born February 4, 1948, in Plainfield, NJ, he was the son of the late William F. and Elma G. (Riley) Petervary. He had formerly resided in Green Brook, NJ, Piscataway, NJ, and most recently, Flemington, NJ for the last 35 years. Bill lived a remarkable life dedicated to family, community, and service.
Bill had a diverse career, serving for many years as a truck driver for Matthews Transport in Middlesex, NJ, before retiring in 2010. His retirement was marked by love and joy as he and his soulmate, Jenny, spent the past five winters in Dunedin, Florida. During this time as snowbirds, they embraced their community, participating in activities such as walking through the neighborhood and enjoying games of cornhole and going to dinners and dancing.
A proud Vietnam combat veteran, Bill entered the United States Army in 1967, served during the Tet Offensive of 1968, and attained the rank of Sergeant before receiving his honorable discharge in 1969. His commitment to service extended beyond his military career; he was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 24 years, illustrating his dedication to not only his own journey but also to helping others.
Bill was known for his love of treasure hunting at garage sales and flea markets, often traveling to places such as the Golden Nugget in Lambertville, NJ, Rice's Market in Lahaska, PA, and Neshanic Flea Market, Neshanic, NJ. His hands-on approach to life was evident in his passion for "fixing stuff" and his skillful handiwork. A devoted fan of the New York Giants, he also cherished memories from cruises to destinations like Belize, Roatan, Honduras, Cozumel, Mexico, and the Bahamas.
His proudest accomplishments were the moments spent with his family, particularly with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bill’s legacy is carried on by his beloved wife of 20 years, Jennifer C. (Kail) Petervary of Flemington, NJ; his children, Vincent Petervary (Chimene) of North Plainfield, NJ, Jason Petervary (Tracy) of Victor, ID, and Kim Hagan of Summerville, SC; as well as his grandchildren, Jacob Petervary (Destiny) of Pennsauken, NJ, and Kate Diaz (Carlos) of St. Petersburg, FL. His great-grandchildren, Mason and Zoey Diaz, were the light of his life. He is also survived by his siblings, Judy Bevan, Cristi Bauer (Cary), and Michael Petervary (Crickett).
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects and honor his life during a visitation on Saturday, December 7, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home located at 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ, followed by a memorial service with military honors beginning at 3:00 PM in the funeral home. Flowers will be welcome.
Per Bill's wishes, his remains were donated to the Mercer County Community College Mortuary Science Program, West Windsor, NJ. Interment will be private.
Bill's spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His love for family and dedication to service leave a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to have crossed his path.
