William Hatley, fondly known as Billy, was born on August 10, 1965, in Passaic, New Jersey, to Marvin and Patricia (nee: Rutledge) Hatley. As the youngest of five siblings, he brought unique joy to his family throughout his life. William faced significant challenges from an early age, including profound intellectual disability resulting from a congenital cerebral defect. Nonetheless, his spirit shone brightly as he navigated his journey.
In 1967, William moved to a care residence in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and at the age of five, he was admitted to Hunterdon Developmental Center (HDC), where he would spend many years. Known for his love of sensory experiences, he cherished opportunities to engage with nature, enjoy multisensory stimulation rooms, and participate in activities, such as listening to books in group settings and attending music events. He found delight in familiar routines and treasures in the simple aspects of life, including watching television and playing with trucks and small vehicles.
Billy formed meaningful connections with the staff at HDC, particularly those who provided the individualized attention he preferred. Though he wasn’t very social with his peers, he expressed affection and enjoyed being around those he felt comfortable with, sharing hugs with the staff members he liked. His lively emotions were communicated through expressive facial gestures, showcasing his vibrant personality despite his limited means of verbal communication.
Throughout his years at HDC, William developed a fondness for Chinese food and had enjoyed participating in the facility's recycling program during his younger years. Summer camping trips at Echo Park were also a highlight, allowing him to experience the joy of the outdoors. In the later years of his life, William faced medical challenges that led to increased dependency on care staff. Regardless of these challenges, his spirit remained a testament to the joy he brought to those around him.
William is remembered lovingly by his surviving sister, Debra Hatley Oegerle, along with the staff and friends who knew him well. Although he faced significant obstacles, Billy’s life was filled with moments of joy, love, and heartfelt connections that will be cherished in the memories of his family and caregivers.
