William Robert "Bill" Atwell, born on February 13, 1955, in Philadelphia, PA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA surrounded by his loving family after a brave battle with cancer. Born in Philadelphia, PA, February 13, 1955, he was the son of the late Robert and Evelyn (Calhoun) Atwell. Bill's life was characterized by his unwavering dedication to his work, his deep commitment to family, and his passion for restoring cars and interest in vintage cars.
After 32 years, Bill retired from ShopRite of Flemington, where he worked primarily as the Appy/Deli Clerk. His colleagues and customers alike appreciated his kindness and dedication; he truly enjoyed helping people, no matter the circumstances, and his enthusiasm for his job was evident throughout his tenure there. His retirement came in October 2025, marking the end of a long, fulfilling career.
He was a graduate of Cardinal Dougherty High School in Philadelphia, working outside of his schooling to provide for tuition costs. Bill's educational foundation helped propel him into a life dedicated to service in the community.
Since 1995, he had made his home in Washington, NJ, where he continued to make lifelong connections and cherished memories.
Bill is sadly missed by his wife of 39 years, Elizabeth "Beth" (Shaw) Atwell; his daughter, Laura Atwell; and his son and daughter-in-law, Jason Atwell and his wife Melissa. He is also survived by his nine siblings and their spouses: Evelyn Joann Cousin (Jim), Hazel Shusterman (Sid), Tom Stearne (Mary), Susan Oscilowski (Fran), Karen Marenbach (Al), Teresa O'Rourke (Michael), David Atwell (Larissa), Ryan Atwell, and Maureen Brinsfield (Jeff).
In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his brother, the late Robert "Bobby" Atwell. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he will be remembered for his generous spirit and work ethic.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Noon, followed by a memorial service at 12:00 PM Noon. Both events will take place at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, located at 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822. Interment will be held privately.
