Susan Virginia Young

It is with deepest sadness that our family announces the passing of Susan Virginia Young of Califon, New Jersey, on May 22, 2026, at the remarkable age of 84.

Susan was born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 11, 1941, to Archie Johnson and Katherine Derschuck Johnson. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends. Her warm heart and caring spirit touched the lives of everyone who knew her.

For 54 years, Susan was the loving and devoted wife of her surviving husband, Robert Lee Young. Together they built a life centered around love, family, and lasting memories.

Sue found her greatest joy in spending time with her children and grandchildren, as well as caring for her beloved plants and flowers. She treasured her frequent gatherings at LongHorn Restaurant with her nephew Dave and his wife Jill, her many breakfast outings at The Towne Diner, and the wonderful dinners shared from Oscar's Cafe. Rarely was she without a McDonald’s iced coffee in hand, one of life’s simple pleasures she truly enjoyed. Sue also loved spending time with friends attending productions at the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse and sharing her beautiful singing voice as a member of the Hunterdon County Senior Chorus.

Sue touched the lives of countless people through her kindness, warmth, and genuine compassion for everyone she met.

Susan is survived by her husband Robert Young; sister, Linda Collins; and her children and their families: Robert James Young and his wife, Jessica, of Aurora, Colorado; and Holly McCallum-Young and her wife, Lauren, of Califon, New Jersey. She was also the proud and loving grandmother of Nicholas, Jacob, and Matthew Wittkop as well as the Aunt to several nieces and nephews.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents Archie and Katherine Johnson and her sister Barbara Kerr.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 8, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the VFW; 179 Main Street; Glen Gardner, New Jersey 08826. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and celebrate Susan’s life and memory.
