Dr. Russell J. Stier Jr, 85, of Raritan Township, NJ passed away Wednesday January 19, 2022, at the Hunterdon Medical Center.
Known as Russell, Russ, Jack, Uncle Jack, Poppy, P.Pop and Dr. Stier, he was born on September 28, 1936 to the late Russell John and Ethel Ickes Stier. He grew up in Westfield NJ where he met the love of his life, Dorothy Schneider Stier. Together “Russ” and “Dottie” built their own home on Leaver Lane in Flemington NJ where they raised a family and enriched the lives of many in the community. They were married for 49 years before Dottie’s passing in 2011.
Russell attended Franklin and Marshall College for undergraduate studies and completed his PhD in Psychology at Rutgers University. He had a passion for guiding children and helping families in need. Early in his career he worked as a biology teacher and high school guidance counselor before opening his own private practice in Trenton NJ as a psychologist. His warm engaging smile, non-judgmental demeanor, and desire to help anyone and everyone in need, blessed him with an extensive and far-reaching circle of friends.
Russell served as a volunteer for Brightside Adult Day Care of Flemington as well as Meals on Wheels. He was also a devout member of the Flemington Baptist Church. He had an ear for music and shared his gift with all, through the church choir as well as the “Quartertones”, an acapella quartet. He enjoyed playing the piano, tuba, and harmonica, and was self-taught on the guitar. A member of the “Shanty Shifters” camping club, “Russ” had a way of bridging the gap between young and old through folk music and campfire songs.
His adventurous spirit led to many memorable outings, and destinations across the globe with family and friends. A skilled pilot, he also spent many hours soaring high above Hunterdon County in his Cessna. In keeping with his personality, Russell also shared the wonder of flight with friends, family, and troubled youth.
He led a full, active life, filled with meaning and happiness, and will be sorely missed by many. Surviving are his son, Peter (Cheryl) Stier of Niskayuna NY and daughter Robin (Rich) Beaumont of Quakertown PA, four grandchildren Cassandra and Christopher Stier and Olivia and Jason Beaumont, a sister, Linda Seaholm and her husband Oden “Woody” of Milford Ct., a sister in-law, Nancy Vanhoenacker of Apex N.C., and numerous nieces and nephews.
A special thanks to Sally Martin, Sindy Estrada and Nelson Pornubi, who helped to enrich his life, as well as the staff of Independence Manor where Russell resided for the past 9 years. His passing leaves a huge void in this world, but his memory will live on in the countless lives of those he touched.
Cremation services will be private under the direction of Holcombe -Fisher Funeral Home, Flemington. A memorial service to celebrate Russell’s life will be held on March 19, 2022, at 1:00 PM in the Flemington Baptist Church, 170 Main St. Flemington NJ. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Covenant House or Michael J Fox Parkinson Research.
