Porfirio Antonio Candelario (lovingly referred to as Papi, Pops, and Grandpa Papi) passed away on Tuesday afternoon, October 27, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones at 70 years old. He was born on July 14, 1956, in Miches, Dominican Republic. In his late teens, he immigrated to the United States with his late mother, Gloria, beginning a new chapter that would be defined by hard work, devotion to family, and a generous spirit.
He worked in the garment industry and later became a successful self-employed contractor, working primarily in interior construction. He was resourceful, entrepreneurial, and a natural problem solver who could fix anything. Those who knew him admired not only his strong work ethic, but also the confidence and care he brought to every task.
Outside of work, Porfirio found joy in the things he loved most. He was an amazing cook and served as the head chef for every holiday and countless dinners that brought the family together around the table. After cooking for the family all day, he could be found resting in his recliner, chatting with his friends, or watching Antique Roadshow or different novelas.
His family remained his proudest accomplishment. He was deeply loved by those around him, and his warmth, gentle humor, and generosity left a lasting impression on everybody who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Porfirio is survived by his wife of 50 years, Caridad. He is also survived by his children: his daughter Gloria and her husband, Edson; his son Porfirio, Jr.; his son Peter and his wife, Erika; and his daughter Christelle. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Selena, Antonio, Layla, Felix, Peter Jr., Izaak, Ellie, and Levi.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main St, Flemington, New Jersey 08822. A Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. at the Saint Magdalen Roman Catholic Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ 08822. Graveside services and entombment will take place at the Immaculate Conception Mausoleum, Old Allerton Road, Clinton Township, New Jersey 08801.
Porfirio Antonio Candelario will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, with a faithful heart, always willing to help others. He was a gifted cook, skilled craftsman, and a man whose love for his family stood at the center of his life. His memory will remain a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
