Phyllis Ann Ewing

Phyllis Ann Ewing, aged 77, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Morristown Medical Center, Morristown, NJ. Born on January 27, 1948, in Frenchtown, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Evelyn (Fenwick) Kirk. She dedicated her life to service and family in Hunterdon County, where she resided her entire life.

Phyllis had an illustrious career in health and senior services, serving as the statewide respite care Program Coordinator and home health aide scheduler of Visiting Home Health Services in Quakertown, NJ, before becoming an Assistant Director of Meals on Wheels in Hunterdon, Inc., in Flemington, NJ. Her commitment to helping others was evident through her various roles and her enduring passion for community service.

Phyllis often told her account of surviving the Frenchtown Flood of 1955 and sledding in the cemetery as a young girl. A proud graduate of Delaware Valley High School, Class of 1966, Phyllis was a beloved member of the Cherryville Baptist Church community, having been a member since 1969. She did it all from Bible Study to Strawberry and Peach Festivals. Her faith and involvement in the church enriched her life and the lives of many others.

Wherever she went Phyllis made a friend, if she didn't already know someone. Phyllis enjoyed traveling with friends, abroad with Helen and locally with Lyndalee. Her loyal sidekick Cheryl had a shared love of baking. The two would shop for each other and could often be found porch sitting. Pam, her trusted massage therapist turned friend, became a dinner guest and confidant. Gail, her sister-in-law, was a constant over the years. There are too many wonderful women in her circle to name them all. She cherished every friend she made. Her vibrant personality was complemented by her many interests. She looked forward to her almost daily coffee gatherings at the Flemington Deli and had a special bond with her pets, particularly her beloved canine companion, Lady. An accomplished baker, she won several baking competitions and delighted in judging them at the county fair. Her famous apple and pumpkin pie, and cheesecake were cherished by all who had the pleasure of tasting them. Food was her love language and those close to her knew she cared for them.

Phyllis and her late husband often spent their time with the grandkids at their vacation house in the Poconos. They would help Phyllis and Barry with their large garden where they grew towering sunflowers and snap peas, attended the local West End Fair, and would play in the "crick", as Phyllis would call it. Known for her love of old English crime shows and reading almost every mystery novel in the library, Phyllis could always be found walking the towpath and various parks with her dearest friends, or attending her grandkids' extracurricular events. A true hostess at heart, Phyllis would frequently host dinner and brunch parties for her girlfriends, and a holiday party for her friends and family. Phyllis would always have her grandkids over for sleepovers with a French toast breakfast. She also took a beloved passion in caring for her late dog, Rusty, who was a large yellow Labrador Retriever that she had since puppyhood. Phyllis had kept her flowerbeds immaculate and often read gardening magazines, along with ensuring that her hummingbird feeder was always full. Incredibly, Phyllis was a very dedicated universal blood donor and was remarkably in the 1,000 pint club at the Hunterdon Medical Center and took much pride in giving to others in any way she could.

Affectionately known as "Mimi" to her grandchildren, she was devoted to her family, regularly attending their sporting events and being actively involved in their lives. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Colleen Ewing, of Flemington, NJ; four grandchildren, Sam Ewing (Megan) of Stroudsburg, PA, Rachel Ewing (Kevin) of Flemington, NJ, John Ben Ewing (Sena) of Okinawa, Japan, and Ted Ewing, also of Flemington, NJ; her brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Mary Kirk of Milford, NJ; and her daughter-in-law, Paula Ewing, of Palmerton, PA.

Phyllis was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, J. Barry Ewing, in 2013, her son, John Steven Ewing in 2022, and her step-brother, Bill Toikka, also in 2022.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Cherryville Baptist Church, located at 594 Cherryville Road, Flemington, NJ, immediately followed by a memorial service in the church at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
