Hillsborough Township, NJ

Peter J. Peterson, Jr., age 73 years, passed away on Tuesday evening, June 23, 2026, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital-Somerset, Somerville, NJ. Born on February 14, 1953, in Neptune, NJ, he was the son of the late Irene (Araps) Peterson and Peter J. Peterson, Sr. Peter’s life was one marked by achievement, joy, and meaningful relationships.

Peter grew up in Toms River, NJ where he was an excellent athlete. In fact, he played football, wrestled, and was a lifeguard and enjoyed surfing in the summers. Additionally, he enjoyed playing recreational rugby and excelled in taekwondo in his younger years.

Peter enjoyed a successful career as a wine salesman, working for the American BD Company, a wine wholesaler and importer, in Glen Rock, NJ. His professional accomplishments were matched only by his zest for living. Known for being up for any challenge, Peter was someone who truly made the most of every moment. His enthusiasm for life was evident in everything he did—from pursuing personal interests to sharing laughter with those around him.

Peter’s love for adventure took him across the globe. He delighted in traveling, having explored remarkable destinations including the Caribbean and the US West Coast with his daughter, Northern Quebec with his son, and several European countries such as England, Italy, and Greece. One of his most cherished memories was witnessing the breathtaking northern lights during a fishing trip to Canada, an experience that reflected his ongoing curiosity and appreciation for the world’s wonders.

Beyond his many travels and endeavors, Peter was admired for his warmth, humor, and dynamic personality. He had an amazing sense of humor and had the ability to find humor in almost anything. Moreover, he found great joy in fishing, attending comedy shows, and, above all, spending time with family and friends. Peter was a devoted father, teacher, and role model, leaving a lasting impression on those who had the privilege of knowing him. His compassion extended to animals, particularly pitbulls, whom he loved and often rescued.

Peter is survived by his son, Kevin M. Peterson, of Hillsborough, NJ; his daughter, Jill Peterson, of Bound Brook, NJ; and his sisters, Thelma Sorrentino, of Florida, and Pam Parent, of Canada.
