Paul Stephen Decker, a remarkable individual whose life was marked by love, dedication, and service, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Monday, January 5, 2026, at the Maplewood at Princeton Assisted Living Facility, Plainsboro Township, NJ. He was 88 years old. Born on May 12, 1937, in Paterson, NJ, Paul was the son of the late Stephen and Ethel (Seiple) Decker and lived most of his life in Fair Lawn, NJ. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and warmth.
Before retiring, Paul dedicated over 30 years to his career as a Director for Pfizer, Inc., located in New York City. His commitment to his work was only rivaled by his devotion to family and community. He was a proud member of the United States Navy for 12 years, serving valiantly as a navy corpsman attached to the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, before receiving an honorable discharge in 1967. This experience shaped his character and instilled in him the values of loyalty and service to others.
Paul's educational journey began in Fair Lawn, where he not only excelled academically but also distinguished himself as a standout wrestler at Fair Lawn High School, earning accolades by placing in states twice. He continued his learning and received a degree in Master of Education, later sharing his knowledge as an adjunct professor at NYC University and Baruch CUNY, as well as driving school instructor for AARP later in life.
Generosity and positivity defined Paul's personality. He was known for his good disposition and happy-go-lucky nature, earning the affection of everyone who crossed his path. Those who knew him would often say he possessed "the biggest heart," always extending love and care to his family and friends.
Paul and his beloved wife, Virginia F. (Windfuhr) Decker, shared a beautiful life together since childhood and married for 69 years. They were active members of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Fair Lawn, NJ, and later, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Flemington, NJ, for more than two decades. Paul’s proudest accomplishments included nurturing his family and contributing positively to his community.
He is survived by his wife Virginia, his childhood sweetheart; their sons and significant others, Ronald and Laura Decker, Richard Decker and partner Tammy Somers, and Randall and Dawn Decker; his grandchildren, including Colleen Decker and her husband Ben, as well as Bryan Decker, Zachary Kasas, and Dylan Kasas; and his two great-grandchildren, Graham and Clara; and nephews Trent and Mark. Paul is predeceased by his parents and his sister, Joan Simmons and nephew, Scott.
Paul enjoyed life to the fullest, enjoying his friends and family. He was heavily involved as a church counselor, youth group organizer and deacon, loved walks on the beach with their beloved pups near their Hilton Head home, enjoyed vacationing with his family and closest friends on road trips, and just generally enjoyed life. He was also an avid reader, indulging in countless large novels, and found pleasure in building puzzles during his leisure time.
