Paul Sauerland, age 92, died, Saturday, August 12, 2023, at his home in Readington Township NJ surrounded by his loving family.
Born, February 4, 1931, in the Bronx NY, Paul was the son of the late Paul C. and Elisabeth (Klein) Sauerland Sr. He graduated from Flemington High School in 1949 and began working at the former Hunterdon County National Bank of Flemington as a file clerk. Forty-two years and several mergers later, he retired as Senior Vice President for Operation of First Fidelity Bank-North Jersey. Paul was a 1957 graduate of Rutgers University College and went on to do graduate work at NYU. He also graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Paul had enlisted in the NJ National Guard in 1949 and retired 32 years later as Lieutenant Colonel. He is a Charter member of the National WWII Museum and a Life Member of the National Guard Association of New Jersey and the USA.
Paul served as a Hunterdon County Freeholder for 12 years and was a Board member and Chairman of the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority. He began his political career on the Readington Township Committee and served as Mayor for one year. Subsequently, he was a member of the Township Planning Board where he served for approximately 25 years, as well as a member of the Utilities Authority, the Board of Social Services, the Health & Human Services Advisory Council and the Board of Agriculture.
Paul has been active in the Grange at the local, county, and State levels for over 60 years, as well as a former State Treasurer and administrator of the Education Scholarship Loan and Morris Grange Grant Funds. He was a member of the Hunterdon County Board of Agriculture and New Jersey Farm Bureau, the New Jersey Polled Hereford Association, and Board Member of the New Jersey Museum of Agriculture.
Active with the Boy Scouts for over 50 years, Paul has been a Scout, Scoutmaster, District Chairman, and currently serves on the Council Board Investment Committee. He has also been active with the Round Valley Youth Center since its beginning in the early 1960s as one of its founders, serving a number of years as its President and as a Trustee.
Paul had been a member of the Kiwanis Club beginning in 1958 and is a former member of the Flemington Jaycees and Community Services Council. He has also served as President and Board Member of the United Way of Hunterdon County and Board member of Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program. He was a board member of the 200 Club of Hunterdon County, a former member of Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce and a former President of the Prospect Hill Cemetery Association.
Paul was a man of great faith and was a Communicant at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Whitehouse Station, and a Life Member of the Jubilee Council 3294 of the Knights of Columbus of Flemington.
In his leisure time, Paul and Ann for many years enjoyed camping and travelling in their RV to many parts of the country, boating and bringing along his fishing gear, and listening to classical music selections. He was a fan of the New York Yankees, as well as being a football fan where he rooted the rare combination of the NY Football Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles.
In addition to his parents, Paul was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Faller. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Ann (Schomp) Sauerland, his daughter, Debra Stillman of Mahwah, NJ, his son, Richard C. Sauerland of Readington Township NJ, and his granddaughter, Kate Stillman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 AM on Friday, August 18, 2023, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 390 County Route 523, Whitehouse Station NJ 08889. Interment will follow at Three Bridges Cemetery in Three Bridges NJ. Calling hours will be on Thursday, August 17, 2023, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington NJ 08822.
