Michael J. Bonieski

Michael J. Bonieski, known to many as Mike, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026, in Flemington, NJ, just two months after celebrating his 86th birthday. Born June 15, 1940, in Kingston, Pennsylvania, he grew up in the town of Luzerne that shaped his early years with strong values, a love of learning, and a spirit of generosity that would define his life.

Mike’s devotion to education was evident from his youth. He graduated from Luzerne High School, continuing his academic journey at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, PA, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He furthered his studies with master’s degrees from both Scranton University and Seton Hall University, and completed his Doctorate of Education at Nova University. These accomplishments were reflections of his lifelong commitment to learning and growth.

For over four decades, Mike served the Branchburg Public Schools with unwavering dedication. Throughout his time in the district, he held numerous educational and administrative roles, ultimately retiring as the Director of Special Services. In this position, he made a lasting impact on students, families, and colleagues, remembered for his leadership, kindness, and tireless advocacy for quality education.

Mike was a man of faith, deeply involved as a member of St. Magdalen de Pazzi Catholic Church in Flemington, where he served as an usher. He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association (NJPSA). His commitment to his community extended beyond the classroom; he ran the Summer Recreation Program in Raritan Township at one point and was a former member of the Flemington-Raritan Board of Education.

Devoted to his family above all else, Mike was the beloved husband of Jean (Spears) Bonieski, who stood by his side throughout life’s journeys for more then 62 years. He is survived by his son, Michael and daughter-in-law Tammy, his daughter, Karen O’Boyle and son-in-law Patrick. Mike’s pride in his grandchildren was immense—they meant the world to him. He leaves cherished memories with Michael and Matthew Bonieski, Kara and Kaitlin O’Boyle, and Patrick O’Boyle.  He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Michael R. and Mary A. (Regal) Bonieski; his brother, Richard Bonieski, his sister-in-law Jean Richard, and his nephew, Raymond Bonieski. Their memories remained close to his heart.

Those who knew Mike will remember his vibrant sense of humor, his warm nature, and his philanthropic spirit. He was a family man through and through, well liked by all who crossed his path. Holidays and family gatherings were often enlivened by his spirited debates, good-natured teasing, and ever-present laughter.

Mike’s interests were as varied as they were passionate. A true lover of history, he could often be found absorbed in a new book. He took great pride in meticulously caring for his yard, and he had an adventurous streak, traveling the world alongside Jean. Their journeys together—especially their trips to Europe, Alaska, and the National Parks across the United States—were treasured highlights in their lives. He relished a good game of chess or Trivial Pursuit and was always up for a lively poker match with friends. A good round of golf and fishing offered him hours of joy and relaxation.

Family and friends are invited to honor Michael’s life at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main St, Flemington, NJ, with a viewing on Monday, August 17, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Mike’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, followed by entombment at St. Magdalen Mausoleum, 94 North Main Street, Flemington.  For additional information or to leave an online condolence, please visit www.holcombefisher.com.
