Marie S. Kubicek, a dedicated educator, beloved community member, and cherished matriarch, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026, in Raritan Township, New Jersey. Born on March 5, 1934, in Jersey City, NJ, Marie's life was marked by service, strength, and an enduring independence that touched all who knew her.
Marie spent the greater part of her life in Hunterdon County, residing here since 1949. Her commitment to education and her faith were evident through her early professional endeavors and lifelong involvement in her church community. She was one of the two original teachers at the St. Paul Christian Nursery School, shaping young minds with care and dedication. Her participation in the church extended beyond teaching; she was an active member of the St. Paul Social Ministry and a vital contributor to the Ladies Guild and Quilting Group.
Known for her ever-available spirit and courageous heart, Marie was a pillar of strength and independence. Among her proudest accomplishments was her avid world travel; she was an intrepid explorer who visited all 50 states and every continent except Antarctica. She savored the special times spent cruising with her sister-in-law, Chris Sopoci, sharing experiences that added rich chapters to her remarkable journey.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, William and Helen (Dominick) Henkel; her husband, John Kubicek, who passed in 1987; and her sister, Margaret and her husband Robert Mezoff, brother-in-laws, John Sopoci, Ted Brelsford and Irvin Hockenbury. She leaves behind a loving and devoted family that continues her legacy of love and resilience. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John Kubicek and Laura Boehle from NJ; her daughters and their spouses, Cathy and Roy Speidel from VA, and Diane and Dan Morash from CA, as well as her siblings, Vilma Hockenbury from NJ; William and Stephanie Henkel from Florida; and Linda Brelsford and her husband Roger Schultz from Florida, and her sister-in-law, Christina Sopoci from PA. Marie was a proud grandmother to eight grandchildren John, Keith, Jeannette, Stephanie, Katie, Averill, Maggie, and Richard, as well as a cherished great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren, Conan, Johanna, Quinn, Natalie, Oliver, Wyatt, and Grayson.
