John S. Anderson

April 29, 1928 — June 15, 2021

John S. Anderson, of Asbury, NJ, passed away on June 15, 2021 at age 93. He was born on April 29, 1928 in Seattle, WA.

At age 18 he owned and operated a logging truck in Morgan, WA. When winter set in he studied art at a small Seattle art school. He served as a veteran in an artillery unit in El Paso, TX during the Korean war. He was accepted to Pratt Institute and headed east with his soon to be wife, Marlys Anderson of Lilliwaup, WA. They married January 1960 in New York City and lived in Hoboken, NJ while he continued his studies and sculpted.

Sometime in 1964 he found a disused, 45 year old, school building in Asbury, NJ which would become the family home and his art world. Not yet 35 and becoming well known to the NYC art world, he befriended superstars of the contemporary art world, Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Sol Lewit, and others. He taught sculpture at Pratt Institute, his Alma Mater, Cooper Union, The School of Visual Arts, University of New Mexico, and University of Connecticut. Collections of his work are a part of the permanent collection at The Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art. Across many decades he has shown pieces at numerous museums such as the Bellvue Art Museum in Seattle. Since the early 1960s his work was in the, now defunct, Allan Stone Gallery. He received two Guggenheim grants allowing him to live and create in Mexico and Norway. He continued to create until his recent brief illness.

His wife of 60 years predeceased him. He is survived by his daughter Susan Anderson and Son-In Law Steven Pudney, including his boxer dog friends Mary & Monroe of Flemington, NJ.

Cremation services are private under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. For further information or to leave an online condolence, please visit www.holcombefisher.com.
