Janice N. Gillberg, age 69 of Flemington NJ, died Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at her home.
Jan was born in Newark NJ, April 22, 1951, daughter of the late Kenneth N. and Margaret Struss Norman. Originally from Hillside NJ, after moving to North Plainfield NJ, Jan graduated from North Plainfield High School in 1969.
Jan was also a graduate of Newark State Teacher’s College (now Kean University), and was a devoted elementary teacher who loved children and loved teaching. After graduation, Jan was married in 1974 and became a resident of North Plainfield. In 1982, Jan and her family relocated to Flemington.
Jan started her teaching career in the North Plainfield School System, and after taking time to raise her family, became a first-grade teacher in the Flemington-Raritan School District, retiring in 2013.
Jan was always an active person, and was a member, Deacon and Elder of the Flemington Presbyterian Church, where she also taught Sunday School for over 30 years.
Jan was a former Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother, as well as a past President of the Hunterdon Central Regional High School Band Parents Association. She was also a member of the PEO (Philanthropic Education Organiztion), and the Parent-Teacher Organization.
After her retirement, she lived for her family; especially her grandchildren. She and her husband, Jim, enjoyed the Jersey Shore, particularly Ocean City NJ and travelling the world with their best friends.
Her son, Steven Gillberg, died in 2018. Surviving are her husband of 46 years, James E. Gillberg, her daughter, Kirsten Nast of Flemington NJ, her daughter-in-law, Tracy Gillberg of Flemington NJ, her mother-in-law, Elaine Gillberg of Littleton CO, two grandchildren, Liam J. Nast and Mia L. Gillberg, and a step-grandson, Rafael Genao.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 9, 2020 at 11:00 am at the Flemington Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Flemington NJ. Interment will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Flemington. Calling hours will be Sunday, November 8, 2020 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington NJ.
