James E. Hanrahan

March 14, 1953 — July 27, 2025

Asbury, NJ

It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of my father, James Emmett Hanrahan, who departed on July 27, 2025. Born on March 14, 1953, to Marguerite McCoy and William Patrick Hanrahan, my father lived a life characterized by resilience, keen intellect, and his own charm.

He was the fifth of seven children, growing up alongside his siblings, Bill Hanrahan, Anne Ward, Jude Hanrahan, Eileen Felton, Maureen Sturchio, and John Hanrahan. Stories from their childhood are full of my dad scaring off bullies and taking household items apart to see how they worked.

My father was exceptionally intelligent, recognized as a National Merit Semifinalist, and briefly attended the University of Georgia to study Forestry—a path that reflected his enduring love for nature and animals. He possessed an extraordinary mechanical aptitude; there was nothing my dad couldn't fix, once he got around to it. Friends and family frequently sought his expertise for everything from car troubles to computer repairs. And he never said no.

On October 2, 1977, he married my mother, Janet, undoubtedly ensuring a happier, more comfortable, and longer life than he otherwise would have had. I am their only daughter, Kaitlyn. While our relationship experienced its difficulties when I was younger, I grew to respect his qualities and find love and forgiveness in adulthood.

My father found joy in fishing, boating, and reading. He was a perpetual learner who cherished time spent outdoors. Throughout his career, he worked as a Transport Refrigeration Mechanic and a Longshoreman at the Port of Newark, NJ, always ensuring his family was provided for. He had a remarkable ability to form connections, often forging friendships with ease, and these relationships, though formed quickly, often lasted for life.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet; his daughter, Kaitlyn; and his cherished grandchildren, Aurora and Lavinia. He also leaves behind his siblings, Bill, Anne, Jude, Eileen, Maureen, and John, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends who will deeply miss him. As well as his faithful canine companion for the past 12 years, Abby.

We acknowledge that my father's path was not always easy, but his brilliant mind, his strong will, and the profound love he held for his family, particularly for my mother and me, will be the memories we carry forward. Our shared peace at the end of his life is a gift I hold dear.
