Ian “Heff” Heffernan, a lifelong Hunterdon County resident, died suddenly on January 18, 2022 at Hunterdon Care Center in Raritan Township, NJ at the age of 45.
Born in May 1976, Ian was a 3-time Ironman Triathlon World Championship competitor, race director, world traveler, and one-of-a-kind.
Ian, never a man of half-measures, was most known for his fierce competitiveness and singular focus. Ian commenced his athletic endeavors at the age of 7 as a 3-sport (soccer, basketball, baseball), 8-year veteran of the Bethlehem Township Booster Club Sports Program. Ian competed in his first triathlon, the Skylands Triathlon, while still in high school. He quickly rose to be a top competitor, qualifying for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii several times and in other Ironman Triathlons around the world. Ian went on to combine his love of sports and adventure with his experience competing in triathlons to become the founder of the New Jersey Multisport Association which organized many triathlons around the state. Ian was an “out of the box” thinker, facing almost everything with determination, humor and a twinkle in his eye.
Ian was a 1994 graduate of North Hunterdon High School and was inducted into the North Hunterdon High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013 as a member of the 1992-1994 boys cross country teams. He attended Rutgers University graduating with a BS in Computer Science.
While at Rutgers, Ian was recruited by and went to work for Nabisco (later Kraft Foods), and later he joined Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP), where he worked in Internet Security.
Ian is survived by his children, Sydney and Hunter Heffernan of High Bridge, his mother, Carole Potter of South Orange, formerly of Flemington, his father and stepmother, Frank and Micki Heffernan of Monterville WV, his brother and sister-in-law Brendan Heffernan and Kelly Ann Harris of Maplewood and their children, Kate, Margaret & Brendan. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
