Mr. Hiram I. Bellis, age 92, went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 2, 2008 at Westminster Health and Rehab Center in Rock Hill, SC. Preceding him in death was his wife, Edna Holcombe Bellis, two sisters and two brothers.
He is survived by his daughter, Joan Bellis of Sand Lake, MI; a sister-in-law, Katherine Bellis of Colorado Springs, CO; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Born in Ringoes, NJ, he was the son of Hiram D. Bellis and Etta Phillips Bellis. After graduating from Flemington High School, he attended Trenton Teacher’s College where he earned his Bachelor’s degree. He and Etta Holcombe were married in June of 1941.
During WWII, he served in the Navy and was stationed in San Diego. After the war, they returned to NJ, but the sunshine of southern California lured them back to San Diego where he spent his working life in the aircraft industry. After retirement, they moved to Rock Hill in 1980.
Hiram was always deeply involved in Christian ministries where ever he lived. He served as an elder in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, was on the Southern California Missions Board, and taught Sunday school. He also taught the senior’s Sunday school class at Westminster, was a Gideon, and was involved in a jail ministry.
Burial will take place in Amwell Ridge Cemetery, Larison's Corner, NJ under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The date will be announced later.
