Elizabeth A. Bernhard, age 88 years, formerly of Flemington, NJ, died Thursday, October 27, 2022, at Moravian Hall Square, Nazareth, PA.
Betty was born in Linvale, NJ, July 26, 1934, daughter of the late Vincent and Claudina Schwarz Menchek, and had resided in East Amwell Township and the Flemington area most of her life until moving to Bethlehem, PA. in 2012.
Betty was a graduate of Flemington High School, Trenton State Teachers College (now The College of New Jersey) and received her Master’s Degree in Education from Cornell University.
A teacher, she taught for many years at the elementary school level and subsequently became an associate professor at the College of New Jersey and in later years, was a volunteer teacher with ESL (English as a Second Language).
Betty loved all sports especially college basketball and with her late husband, Judge Edmund Bernhard, attended over fifty Lafayette-Lehigh football games. She was also an avid tennis player and a member of the Ladies “Gathering”. In addition, she was a former member of the Flemington Presbyterian Church, the Copper Hill Country Club and the Flemington Woman’s Club.
She was one of eight siblings and is survived by one sister, Jean Sprince of Brookfield, CT. Her husband, NJ Superior Court Judge Edmund Bernhard, died in 2008.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Bobbi and Andrew Hanson of Riverside, CT and Betsy and Holden Hummel of Philadelphia, PA , as well as four grandchildren, Brad, Trevor and Holly Hanson and Holden Hummel, Jr.
Private graveside services will be held in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, NJ. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Bethlehem Hospice Care, 801 Ostrum Street, Bethlehem PA 18015 or at www.slhn.org .
Arrangements are under the direction of the HolcombeFisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
