Eleanor M. Wischner

September 27, 1922 — March 26, 2022

Eleanor M. Wischner, age 99, died Saturday, March 26, 2022, at her home in Columbia NJ, where she has lived for the past ten years. She was a resident of Sergeantsville NJ for nearly 90 years before that.

Born September 27, 1922, in Sergeantsville NJ, Eleanor was the daughter of the late Fred and Ethel (Cline) Higgins. She was a graduate of the former Flemington High School and went to work at the Egg Auction in Flemington until her marriage in 1944 to the late Harold G. Wischner. Eleanor and her family were poultry, corn, hay, and oat farmers in Sergeantsville for many years, and Eleanor worked on the farm alongside her husband and other family members, while she raised her two children, Carol and Kenneth.

Eleanor was an active member of the First Brethren Church of Sergeantsville where she sang in the church choir for many years. When that church closed, she became an active member of the Grace Covenant Baptist Church in Flemington NJ. After she and Harold moved to Columbia NJ, they would attend services at Mt. Bethel Church in Mt. Bethel PA. Eleanor loved to read Bible passages and sing hymns throughout her day, and enjoyed watching the Lawrence Welk Show with Harold.

Eleanor was a great cook, and her family and friends were often treated to one of her many specialties including her delicious Macaroni and cheese, Black Walnut Pound Cake, cheesecake, and her special apple pie that she often prepared together with Harold. She also would take vegetables from her garden for canning or freezing to enjoy throughout the year. Her house was often filled with beautiful flowers. Picnics were the source of many gatherings at the farm, enjoyed by the farm and church communities as well as by her family, which truly brought her the most joy.

She was an avid NY Yankees fan and rooted for them when she could, and her nighttime routines often were spent watching ‘Jeopardy’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune.’

In addition to her parents and her husband, Harold G. Wischner, Eleanor was predeceased by her brother, Lester Higgins, and her sister, Kathryn Harris. She is survived by her daughter, Carol A. Gray of Columbia NJ, her son, Kenneth G. Wischner of Milford NJ, her grandson, Jason Wischner, and her granddaughter, and her husband, Megan and Colin Stewart, as well as her special caregiver for the past 11 months, Williette, and her beloved cat, “Buster.”
