Dr. John B. Fuhrmann, 75, died Monday, January 4, 1993 at home.
Born in Flemington, he was a 1934 graduate of Flemington High School, received a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and received his medical training at Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia, graduating in 1943.
Dr. Fuhrmann served with the 1247th Hospital Train Unit, U.S. Army, traveling from coast to coast attending the wounded from overseas. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of captain.
He then entered general practice in Flemington with his father and practiced until retiring in 1983. He served on the staff of Hunterdon Medical Center as a participating physician from 1951 until his retirement and served as former Flemington-Raritan and Hunterdon Central physician for 25 years.
Dr. Fuhrmann was a member, elder, former choir member and clerk of the session of the Flemington Presbyterian Church. He served as co-chairman of the church's Bicentennial Commission in 1992.
He was a director of the former Hunterdon County National Bank, Flemington, from 1972 until its merger with First Fidelity Bank; and was former trustee of the National Cancer Society and served its Hunterdon County Unit for more than 25 years. He received the Bronze Medal from the NJ Division of the American Cancer Society in 1967 for meritorious service.
He was also active for many years in the Boy Scouts in the Flemington area, serving as a merit badge counselor for first aid, stamp collecting, ornithology and nature studies.
He was a member and past president of the Flemington Rotary Club, the National Audobon Society and the Hunterdon Nature Club; past president of the Hunterdon County Medical Society and the Hunterdon County Shrine Club; a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of General Practice and Crescent Temple Shrine, Trenton; a former member of the NJ State Welfare Board; past master of Darcy Lodge No. 37 F&AM, Flemington; past high priest of Clinton Chapter R.A.M., Flemington; and past commander of St. Elmo Commandry No. 14, Lambertville. In 1976, he was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Flemington Rotary Club in appreciation for his services.
Son of the late Dr. Barclay S. and Alberta Rittenhouse Fuhrmann and father of the late Barbara Fuhrmann Abbate, he is survived by his wife, Jane Pedrick Fuhrmann; a daughter, Ann Castro of New Wilmington, Pa.; and a grandson, Jonathan Mark Castro.
Funeral services were under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, Flemington.
Interment was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington.
