Derik Patrick Bolan

July 9, 1987 — February 3, 2026

Clinton, NJ

Surrounded by loving family, Derik Patrick Bolan (38), a beloved son, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township, New Jersey. Born on July 9, 1987, in Somerville, New Jersey, he was the son of Jennifer (Machyousky) Bolan and the late Edward P. Bolan. Derik lived a life that radiated joy and resilience, even amid the challenges he faced.

Known for his striking blue eyes and playful personality, Derik could light up any room with his infectious spirit. He left a lasting impression on those who knew him, one that will be carried forward in memory and heart. He had a fondness for baseball and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, and he also held a special affection for trains—interests that added to the unique and endearing tapestry of his life. He also cherished his childhood summers spent at Camp Fatima, which held a lasting place in his heart.

A resident of Hunterdon County since the age of three, Derik attended the ESC School in West Amwell, where he spent many happy days. His family is deeply appreciative of the dedicated support Derik received, as well as the loving support of his aide, Anne, of Baptistown, NJ, whose care and presence were deeply meaningful to him. Derik’s time at ESC remains in memory as a meaningful experience that provided structure, encouragement, and connection.

Derik’s life journey eventually led him to the Hunterdon Developmental Center, where he quickly became a favorite among staff and aides. Those who cared for him recognized an indomitable spark within him—one that endured despite living with severe cerebral palsy. Derik’s vitality and warmth left a lasting impact on all who knew him, serving as a quiet reminder to treasure life and its fleeting moments. Derik’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff at the Hunterdon Developmental Center for the special care he received since 2019. Special mention to John, Theresa, Dawn, Azizah, and Jean, whose care for Derik went above and beyond, and whose love, humor, patience, and heartfelt dedication brought him comfort, joy, and many meaningful moments. We wish we could name every individual who touched Derik’s life. There are so many others deserving of thanks; please know that all are held in deep gratitude.

Derik is survived by his devoted mother, Jennifer Machyousky Bolan, of Frenchtown, New Jersey, whose unwavering love and commitment to giving him the best possible life remain an enduring inspiration to many. His sister, Bridgette Bolan, of Perkasie, Pennsylvania, stands as a testament to the incredible bond they shared and will carry forward the lessons Derik taught her through a lifetime of love, patience, and understanding. He also leaves behind several cherished nephews: Tristan Adams, Daniel Salushi, Shayne Bolan, and Nicholas Bolan, along with a close family friend, “Aunt” Merry Miller.

Preceding him in death were his father, Edward P. Bolan, and his brother, Michael Edward Bolan, along with his loving maternal and paternal grandparents.

As we remember Derik, we carry forth his spirit—a spirit that reminds us all not to take our lives for granted. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him, forever etched into the fabric of their lives. Derik, you are now free—free to run the bases once more, unbound by limitation, moving with joy and ease.
