Clarence M. Merrell

Clarence M. Merrell, age 90 years, of Flemington, NJ, passed away under hospice care at his home on Tuesday, July 28, 2020.

Clarence was born December 1, 1929, in Quakertown, NJ, son of the late Wilhelmina and Raymond Merrell. He graduated from Frenchtown High School in 1948 and worked as a carpenter until being drafted into the US Army, serving two years in the Korean War. He was discharged in 1953 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Clarence married his high school sweetheart, Esther M. Wilson, in 1952 and enjoyed sixty-eight years of marriage. Clarence joined Carpenter’s Local #455 and worked as a carpenter, mason and then as a construction supervisor for thirty-five years. Clarence also proudly built his own home.

He was a member of Darcy Lodge #37, F&AM of Flemington, NJ, Flemington Elks Lodge #1928, and served as a deacon and elder at the Flemington Presbyterian Church.

Clarence and Esther bowled with dear friends in the church bowling league for more than twenty-five years. In retirement, Clarence drove for the Flemington Car & Truck Country and he and Esther traveled extensively throughout the world.

He was pre-deceased by his son, David, in 2005 and his four siblings, Harold Merrell, Nelson Merrell, Ruth Sigafoos and Margie Rockafellow.

He is survived by his wife, Esther; son Raymond Merrell and his wife, Mary Ann, of Allamuchy, NJ; a daughter-in-law, Marita Merrell of Gaithersburg, MD; five grandchildren, Maya Merrell, Jessica O’Hearn, Jillian DiIonno, Justin Merrell and Kevin Merrell; and three great grandchildren, Rose and Molly O’Hearn and Olivia DiIonno.

Private graveside services with Military Honors will be held in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, NJ, under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Memorials in Clarence’s name may be made to the Flemington Presbyterian Church, 10 East Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822.
