Alice A. Wern, age 83 years, of Annandale, NJ, passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on May 4, 1940, she was the daughter of the late William and Alice (Heron) Dowling. She grew up in Brooklyn, NY and was a 1958 graduate of Prospect Heights High School, Brooklyn, NY. At age 18, she married the love of her life, Buddy Oscar Wern. Buddy served in the United States Navy and the couple moved around quite frequently, but eventually lived in Fairless Hills, PA, and Pequannock, NJ, before ultimately moving to Hunterdon County, NJ in 1984. Alice had resided here for the last 39 years.
As a young woman, Alice was formerly employed by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, but was a homemaker most of her life, raising her five children. She also enjoyed Broadway concerts and shows, especially The Jersey Boys musical. Additionally, she loved spending time in Wildwood Crest, NJ during the summer, but above all, enjoyed the numerous family events and outings she organized over the years.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Buddy Oscar Wern, who died in 2015. Alice is survived by her daughters, Maureen Hill of Annandale, NJ, and Alicia Ghalli of Glen Gardner, NJ, her sons, Brian Wern and his wife Diane of Bayonne, NJ, William Wern and his wife Diane, of South Amboy, NJ, and Brendan Wern of Annandale, NJ; her eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; as well as her siblings, Ellen Frawley of Dumont, NJ, Lawrence Dowling and his wife Anne Marie of Kinnelon, NJ, and Monica Naughton also of Dumont, NJ; and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will take place on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. A funeral service, officiated by Fr. John Primich, will follow at 11:30 AM in the funeral home. Graveside committal prayers and interment with her late husband will take place at 1:30 PM in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA.
