Alan Sproul Painter

Alan S. Painter passed away on July 26, 2026, at his assisted living facility in Morris Plains, NJ. He was 91 years of age.

Alan was born June 18, 1935, in Flemington NJ to Herbert Alan Painter and Olive (Hunt) Painter. He attended Hackettstown Public High School, lettering in football, playing in marching band as a drummer, participating in Sea Scouts, and graduating in 1953. He received a BS in Political Science from Middlebury College in 1957 and later completed the Stanford Executive Program in 1974.

Alan served in the United States Marine Corps immediately after college, having already trained with the Corps during school and then receiving basic training at Quantico, VA. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1957 and first served active duty in the 6th and then the 2nd Motor Transport Battalions. In 1959, Alan transferred to reserve duty, first with Public Affairs Unit 1-1 where he worked to expand understanding and recruitment of minority officers in the Corps, and then East Coast Public Affairs Office NY17 where he worked on the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, Mini-Marathon, Leatherneck Ball, Command And Staff College Foundation, and more. He transferred to the retired reserve in 1983 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonial and fully retired some years later. There is an established link between toxic water exposure in Camp LeJeune, NC, where Alan trained as early as 1958, and the Parkinson’s disease he developed later in life. He continued to support Marine Corps causes with time and contributions long after retirement.

In civilian life, Alan started in a sales role at JCP&L in 1959, but a few years later shifted to what would be a lifelong career in corporate public affairs at a single company which started as Allied Chemical, then became Allied Signal, and finally Honeywell through a series of mergers. As Director of Community Affairs, and Vice President and Executive Director of the Honeywell International Foundation, Alan directed corporate charitable contributions to countless non-profit organizations on a national, regional and local scale. He was a fixture in this role until 2000, when he retired. His work with non-profit, charitable and government organizations extended well past his job, however, as he served on an astonishing array of boards of directors and advisory committees. Some of them included St. John Baptist School in Mendham, Morris YMCA, Morris Arts Council, Morris County Firefighters & Police Academy, National Burn Victim Foundation, OIC of America, Community Medical Center and Morristown Memorial Hospital, Regional Health Planning Council, Fairleigh Dickinson and Drew Universities, United Way of Morris County and more. He also served as a volunteer firefighter in Morristown. Alan embraced the Marine Corps semper fidelis (always faithful) motto throughout his life.

In 1963, Alan married Abigail (Wootton) Hamilton, and had two children, John Alan Painter and Elizabeth Hunt (Painter) Ricciardelli. Starting in a small house in Morristown, NJ, they then moved and committed to rebuilding an historic house in Mendham, NJ, which had been nearly destroyed in a fire. In 1990, Alan remarried to Joann (Kennedy) Cacchio, who survives him. Both were active in the Morristown NJ community where they lived, including the Kellogg Club and Morristown Club.

In retirement, Alan continued working with non-profit and charitable organizations, serving on boards of directors, participating in community events, traveling, supporting military and Marine Corps causes, and enjoying being a grandfather. He moved to assisted living in 2024.

Alan is also survived by his two children, John and Elizabeth, as well as four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St. Peters Episcopal Church in Morristown, August 8, 2026 at 10:00am, and interment privately at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Flemington, NJ.
