Peter T. Hughes

Peter T. Hughes, age 86 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Saturday, March 26, 2005 at the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.

Born in Bells Hill, Scotland, December 25, 1918 to the late Bernard and Ellen Cairns Hughes, Mr. Hughes had resided in Raritan Township since 2002, having previously lived in Arlington, TX, Somerville, NJ, Whitehouse, NJ and Astoria, NY.

He emigrated to the United States on the Fourth of July at four years of age and attended St. Joseph Elementary School and Bryant High School, Astoria, NY. As a teenager, Mr. Hughes worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He went on to become a Postal Clerk for the United States Postal Service working at the Somerville Post Office for many years.

A World War II Veteran of the United States Army and the United States Navy, Mr. Hughes was a member of the American Legion, Stevenson - D'Alessio Post No. 12, Somerville, NJ.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Danielle Nielsen in 2002 and a brother, John Hughes.

Surviving are his wife of sixty-one years, Ruth Wallraff Hughes; a daughter, Suzanne Aversano of Raritan Township, NJ; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Ron Padinske of Trapon Springs, FL; a son-in-law, Richard Nielsen of Arlington, TX; four grandchildren and their spouses, Tracy and Mark Sanders of Crystal, MN, Vicki and Garrett Nees of Arlington, TX, Michael and Karen Aversano of Raritan Township, NJ, and Rick and Kristin Padinske of Tarpon Springs, FL; three great granddaughters, MacKenzie Nees, Amelia Aversano and Riley Sanders; a brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Agnes Hughes of Arlington, TX; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be private. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
