Mary A. Hughes, age 73 years, of Flemington, NJ, died Saturday, October 31, 1981 in the Hunterdon Medical Center, Flemington, NJ.
Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Flemington Presbyterian Church; past president of the Flemington Women's Club and active in its amateur productions; a member of the Hunterdon County Historical Society; and a member of the Col. Lowrey Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution of Flemington, which she served as a regent. She was welfare secretary of the Flemington Service Unit of the Salvation Army, served as chairman of the Flemington Red Cross during World War II, and formerly serviced as service chairman of the Hunterdon County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Hughes also headed the group responsible for the upkeep, renovation and preservation of the Flemington Castle, the oldest building in Flemington.
She was born in Washington, DC, and was the daughter of the late Wiliam Curtis Adams and Mrs. Roberta Stewart Adams. She formerly lived in Pompton Plains and lived in Hunterdon County since 1938.
Her husband, John Ross Hughes, died in 1960, and a son, John Ross Hughes, Jr., died in 1973.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mary Duncan Williamson of Asbury; a brother, Dr. William C. Adams of Dothan, Ala.; her step mother, Mrs. Dorothy Dobbs of Wyckoff; five grandchildren, Tim, Drue, and Susan Williamson of Asbury, John Hughes of California, and Desiree Hughes of Gonzales, La.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hunterdon Medical Center, Flemington.
Funeral services were held in Flemington Presbyterian Church. Interment was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, Flemington.
