Louis Zapko Sr., 85, of Raritan Township, died Saturday, Feb. 19, in Stone Arch Health Care Center in Pittstown, N.J.
He was first employed by Flemington Fur Company and then by the Hunterdon County National Bank of Flemington which is now First Union Bank. While employed at the bank, he owned and operated Rudie's Tavern in High Bridge for three years. He then owned and operated a trucking company which transported the U.S. mail, retiring in 1985.
Born Jan. 12 1915, in Flemington, he was a son of the late Stephen and Veronica Izak Zapko. He had resided in Flemington all his life until moving to Raritan Township in 1969.
He was a communicant of St. Magdalen Church in Flemington.
He was a member of the Flemington Exempt Firemens Association and was a former member of the Flemington Fire Co. He was also formerly a captain of the Flemington-Raritan Rescue Squad.
He and his wife, the former Mae Edmonds, were married 63 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Louis Jr. of Raritan Township and James of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Two brothers, Stephen and Peter, died earlier.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main St., Flemington. Call 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in St. Magdalen Cemetery in Flemington.
