Obituary for Robert LeSage Pierce, MD

To his friends, he was Bob. To his countless patients he was simply Doc. Robert LeSage Pierce, MD passed away at his home of 64 years on Monday, March 26, 2018. He was with his cherished wife Maggie, his son Tim and his three beloved dogs.

This is a life so full, that it is hard to encompass all that he was and all that he meant to everyone who knew him.

He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania almost 94 years ago to Raymond Tressel and Gladys McKee Pierce. A graduate of Millburn High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he completed his under graduate work at Colgate University and attained his medical degree from Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospital, now known as New York Medical College.

In 1954, he became the first associated physician of the newly opened Hunterdon Medical Center. He established his practice in the Town of Clinton, and continued caring for people until his retirement 50 years later. As a general practitioner his vocation incorporated all aspects of medicine, including the delivery of over 200 children.

Many a Sunday, up until he was 92, he could be found playing golf with his son, Jeff. An avid golfer, winning the club championship at Beaver Brook Country Club, he turned his passion into an avenue to help others. He established the Passport Golf Classic, whose proceeds benefited drug prevention programs in Hunterdon County.

He acquired a love of fishing from his time, as a youth, spent at his family’s cabin in the woods of Maine. A proficient fly fisherman, he traveled to many countries for Atlantic salmon. His journeys to Scotland established abiding friendships which continued even up to his passing. His last fishing trip was this past September, with his son Rob, to Canada.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret A. Pierce, his children, Rob and his wife Candi, Tim and his wife Janine, Jeff and his wife Claudia, and his daughter Liz. He has seven grandchildren, Lisa and her husband John, Gerry and his wife Charlene, Bob, Jessie, Abby, Katie and Greg, along with four great grandsons, Pierce, Avery, Emery and Liam.

Please join us in celebration of his life, Friday, March 30th, between 1:30PM to 3:30PM at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, New Jersey 08822.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Atlantic Salmon Federation, PO Box 807, Calais, ME 04619-0807.
